It has been a wild ride for Jelly the Ooze since he was born. Adopted as a pet by a princess, obtaining a soul and a mind, and being blessed by a caring family and doted on by powerful gods. Now, Jelly is accompanying Princess Liliana on her way to the Royal Varian Academy of Magic where they both plan to learn more about the mystical arts. But not all is well, for a mad woman seeks the death of Varia's princess and will stop at nothing to ensure it happens. Add onto that new friends, bullies, and a prophecy, and Jelly has his tendrils full keeping the people he knows and loves safe. Plus, the Ooze has two new companions of his own to deal with and a rather eccentric mentor. In the end, can anyone truly stop the coming of the void? And will Jelly be the one to try?

Jelly goes to magic school. Sounds a bit cliche, but not all that much attention is paid to class part. Mostly on what happens outside and the interaction between the pupils. Jelly definitely is growing up as is the story. It is bit darker and the plots become a bit more complicated. A good end, no cliffhangers, more is sure to follow even if Jelly might very well stop being a royal pet. We do get to see a bit more of the world, and especially the magic system (which remains a bit vague). Jelly gets some new friends as well.

Solid sequel which I enjoyed reading. Not a big fan of prophecy type of story, but at least this one is rather simple and they actually stipulate that the prophecized heroes can loose. Looking forward to the third part.

Chronicles of a Royal Pet The Majesty of Magic Ian Rodgers Damien Sim 9781520981987 Books Reviews

This story of a monster becoming a sentient being is a very interesting entertaining story that I really enjoyed. Most of this book was at the mage school, while an disgruntled aunt of the princess tries to kidnap her. I did not enjoy the cliffhanger ending, and I can't wait for the next installment.
I enjoyed every chapter. I've got to say this book has me excited to see just what trials and adventures await jelly in the future! How big will he grow? Will he ever be able to command understand and interact with slides? He is a royal slime after all! 😃 keep up the amazing work and I'll keep an eye out for the next book!!!!
Again I am surprised at how much I enjoyed this book, its a fairly easy to read book for a much younger audience. I would recommend it to anyone who likes something a bit different. I would like to suggest something to the author though, please mark you book down by volume or something. New readers may not know that this is the second book in the series.
I found this book extremely well written, the lead characters are well developed, it kept my intrigue and the events flowed smoothly. As in the title, if I could have I would have given 4 1/2 stars. I felt the book enveloped Harry Potter meets Blizzard games with it's own individual twist to it. I have yet to read the first book so I am looking forward to reading that one next as an addition to the character background. The reason I didn't go for the 5 stars was that I felt some of the secondary characters needed more developing especially the ones that are more involved at the end and well, ok, a magic school immediately makes a comparison to the Harry Potter series (not fair I suppose) but I felt some things, especially the teachers, were a bit too close for comfort. Spell check it too please. In saying that, still a fantastic story in it's own right and I am looking forward to more books from this talented author, with a few tweeks I can see him maturing into the new C.S. Lewis.
Loved the first book and really enjoyed this one, BUT the plot goes haywire at the end. By this I mean Jelly changes character/motives/behavior noticeably and it's jarring - he's supposedly smart, but misses some pretty obvious plot points. Without any spoilers I'll just say that the last bit of the book changes the direction of the series and main characters in a big way that I'm not 100% sure fits with the characters of the first book. Still enjoyed the read, but I'm left feeling puzzled.
The incorrect word choices and such from the first book are greatly diminished. Not gone entirely, but no longer enough to kick the reader out and make you sit and think about what that line was supposed to say.

Unfortunately, quality of the rest of the work seems to have dropped. The excellent pacing is gone; the heroes go through Grand and rapid escallation in power with little to no conflict or cost, while the villains constantly make vague whispers of their master plan and then just sort of throw their resources around haphazardly, sacrifice all their advantages, and reveal as much as possible of their hand for minimal gain.

But worse than that are the plotholes. Key elements include
a painfully obvious prophecy that we're supposed to believe dozens of geniuses have misinterpreted despite having all the evidence in front of their noses for months and their primary theory being proven false on multiple counts
A secret infiltrator who apparently showed up to start establishing their cover at least a year before the event which *motivated* the plot they were hired to carry out, who then evaded detection through extended personal interaction with the most fastidius background checker in the world, an empath, the avatar of Wisdom, and multiple spirits with the supernatural ability to detect falsehood
A grand finale which had been pinned to a specific time for half the book but took place two days early with no explanation whatsoever, relied upon the heroes never bothering to talk to each other about critical information, and which would have been hard-countered anyway by any of the three established functions of a magic item introduced in the previous book if not for every one of them being conveniently forgotten or retconned.

I don't know if I'll pick up the next book or not. I still want to see where the story is going, but if it continues like this the act of thinking about what will happen next is just going to be punished by a plotline that makes no logical sense and contradicts all the evidence I'm extrapolating from.
The book was good and had a decent pace. Character progression was a little slow or fitful depending on your outlook. No major grammatical issues. The thing that lost a star for me was a few plot holes concerning Jelly's empathy powers. Ian tried to shore up the hole with an explanation that magic is confusing his senses but it was added more as an after thought than a real concern. Which considering Jelly's personality and his want to protect the princess I know he would be more concerned with one of his senses being blocked than was shown.
Jelly goes to magic school. Sounds a bit cliche, but not all that much attention is paid to class part. Mostly on what happens outside and the interaction between the pupils. Jelly definitely is growing up as is the story. It is bit darker and the plots become a bit more complicated.
