Carson Cunningham was a top college basketball player for Oregon State and Purdue and a native of Hoosierland Indiana who believed he could one day play in the NBA, but instead wound up in the minor leagues of professional basketball- the storied and now defunct CBA. It's a league that has turned out a record-setting number of NBA players and coaches, such as Phil Jackson and George Karl, but it wasn't glamorous. Near-empty arenas, interminable bus rides to nowheresville, oddball coaches, little loyalty from management, and meager pay were a few realities of CBA life. Yet, it drew players in with the allure of action and the prospect of an NBA call-up.Carson writes honestly and hilariously of his running and gunning days in the CBA, with flashbacks to his college days where the future seemed brighter than a new pair of Nikes. A top recruit with superior ballhanding and shooting skills along with a sixth basketball sense, in 1997 Carson was a Sporting News All-American freshman who broke Gary Payton's freshman scoring record and a few years later helped his team at Purdue get within a game of the Final Four.

I am fascination by books about life of the edges of sports. This is a good look at minor league pro basketball. The players made 450-850 dollars a week and many of them had some NBA experience and almost all had been very good players for major college programs. The parts covering how they came to be in the CBA were interesting but this takes second place to the actual games and the team's fight for the playoffs. This part of the tale is overdone. I doubt that many readers picked it up for a snapshot of a ten year old recap of the season. The other strong point of the book is the psychological study of the team's coach. One wonders how he could hang on to a job even in the fever swamps of minor league ball. I was curious and looked him up and he is now coach of the Champaign franchise in the even lower Midwest Professional League. I guess there's a place for everyone in this crazy world.

Great story. The background is wonderful. I can see my son in the driveway now spending time before school practicing his corner shots. He's getting ready to attend Andrran this fall and I will be at every game for him at 5959 Broadway.
Thanks coach for sharing!
Entertaining and insightful into a world sports fans don't often get to see. Love the backstories and updates of lesser known players with familiar names. A very light and easy read.

One star taken away because of the tiring subject of the annoying head coach, who seemed like the worst human being in the world. Would have rather not constantly read about him.
A unique look into the underbelly of professional basketball - it's buckets! This is a very entertaining and insightful view of what players that have such a deep love for the game are willing to go through in their quest to continue playing. With a wide array of characters - coaches and players alike - the reader is able to see the talent, as well as the shenanigans, that occur behind the scenes. It was a great read and I would highly recommend it!
Really enjoyed the book. When people don't make the NBA people just dismiss them as busts and fail to remember that they are human beings. This book speaks for those who made it and those who didn't and the many reasons why. It also shows how much luck in addition to the hours of hard work plays a part. I hope Carson Cunningham has a long career coaching because I believe his message is one that can help people. Highly recommended.
Carson Cunningham has delivered with Underbelly Hoops. This book is a great narrative on the life of a basketball junkie trying to make the big time. It is an honest, funny, thoughtful and really allows you to connect with Carson as he writes about life in the CBA and all the interesting people involved. Anyone who enjoys sports of any kind can connect with this story and anyone who has played sports at any level can connect with the love of basketball that Carson so passionately displays in this book. You find yourself rooting for all the players and it really shows how hard it is to make it to the highest level of basketball. Carson was a wonderful basketball player and he has proven himself to be a wonderful writer. Carson and UnderBelly are "Buckets" in my book!!!! I encourage you all to read UnderBelly Hoops as soon as you can buy it.
Let me just say that I grew up watching, following, tracking the Sioux Falls Skyforce so my review may be a little skewed because I had a nostigal interest in the CBA. However I think any sports fan or especially anyone interested in minor league sports will find this book very interesting. The detail that goes into this book (without the book being boring) is amazing. I dont't want to give out any spoilers so I will not talk about the content but I think anyone who reads this book will find the contents of the book at times appalling (in a good way) and at time humorous. I very rarely pay this much or at all for an ebook (I know $5.99 is not a steep price at all) but I found this book very interesting. I honestly offered to take my wifes van out for an oil change so I could sit in the lobby and read this book. You will not be disappointed if you buy this back. Great read
I usually enjoy sports biographies of famous athletes. However, it's not much of a secret that they are going to work hard, become a pro, and make more money than I could in 8000 years of teaching elementary school. There might be some booze, drugs, women, and rivalries thrown in, but that is usually the norm. In Underbelly Hoops, point guard Carson Cunningham, who played at both Purdue and Oregon State, tries one last time to make it to the NBA through his adventures in the CBA. This is a league where most players are finishing out their playing days, or desperately trying to get a crack at an NBA roster with no chance of success. Cunningham is a smart guy who can laugh at the things going on around him, and really has a keen eye for the game. His berating coach can never find fault in himself, and his teammates are good ball players who succeed when the chemistry is right. When it isn't clicking the results are usually pretty bad. The wacky former NBA player Keith Closs makes you laugh and frustrated at how talented players can blow through a fortune of money and are eventually forced to start new chapters in their lives that might be in front of 100 people instead of 10,000. I think it just seemed more realistic to me to hear about the game from a good, not great (a million times better than me) player who uses intelligent observations to explain what is happening both on and off the court. He has little to no money, a wife at home, and a real career waiting for him when he hangs it up. You will root for Carson Cunningham as a player, and at the same time realize that he might even be better off when he gets back to the real world where being able to hug your wife and child every day is even better than sinking a three pointer (although that was a pretty cool feeling when I did it in high school 23 years ago). A welcome change of pace until I willingly read about the next multi-millionaire.
